Many farmers have now turned to other types of poultry due to a lack of margin in the Turkey supply chain, leading to reduced supply which is pushing prices up. 

UK number of turkey chick placings and turkey sent for slaughter are both down significantly:

• Turkey chick placings were down by 3.4% at 2.3 million chicks.

• The number of turkeys ready for slaughtering was down 8.0% at 1.0 million birds 

To make matters worse extreme weather conditions across Central Europe has led to increased mortality which has further reduced market availability.

Of course, Brexit still hangs like a cloud over all of the fresh EU-sourced poultry (one of the key risk areas).

We are anticipating +15-20% cost increase on cooked turkeys and a similar price increase on Fresh turkeys this year.
