Don't Be A Shellfish Lover This Valentine's Day

Over the last few weeks, there has been an increased number of cases of norovirus food poisoning throughout the UK and Europe which have been linked to the consumption of oysters. This is due to seasonal issues including ambient temperatures and high rainfall.

With Valentine’s Day in just over a week, oysters, which are considered by many to be an aphrodisiac, are likely to feature on restaurants’ set menus across the country. These restaurants should be aware of the increased incidence of norovirus and potentially look to replace oysters on their menus with an alternative, safer option.

We are aware of some outlets which have been asked by their local Environmental Health Officers to take oysters off their menus. As a precaution one of our suppliers has taken the decision to suspend the sale of oysters until the risk level returns to a normal level. At this stage, we are unsure if other suppliers will follow suit.

As always, food safety is the number one priority and we hope to see the supply of oysters return to normal in the very near future. If you have any concerns, please contact your account manager for more information.
